How can we represent Onyx’s beautiful diversity of work in a single, unified brand?

Onyx Cinema is a team of filmmakers who create compelling commercials, narratives and documentaries. With a disconnect between their outdated brand and their impressive portfolio, Onyx needed a thought partner to help them revitalize their brand.

APPROACH

Capturing movement and narrative.

When we saw Onyx's videography, we were drawn to the team's fluid camera work and incredible storytelling ability. Our vision was for the new brand to capture that movement and narrative. The logo design features varied, alternating rings that represent both the rings of an onyx stone (what the company was originally named after) and the continued movement of a camera lens. We established an identity system that harmonized the new logo with beautiful stills from Onyx's films. The stills were given a black and white treatment, which proved to be visually compelling and emotionally engaging.
